Jackie
Self stepped down as Yorba Linda's Volunteer Support
Specialist (VSS) in November, 2008. The Girl Scouts
of Yorba Linda want to publicly thank and acknowledge
Jackie for the outstanding job she did, not just for
the Girl Scouts of Yorba Linda, but for all of GSCOC
for so many years.
She
has been a leader, a role model, an advisor, a friend
and a mentor to so many of us.
Thank
You Jackie!

Dear
Jackie,
We want to Thank You for all you have done for us over
the years. You've always been there... all the committee
meetings, the Team meetings, the SUM meetings (even when
there were 4 each month!) You were available to answer
questions, help solve a problem or just listen to a funny
story. You were always positive and helped us see the
"other" side when we didn't like the changes
that came with paperwork and policies. You seemed to be
at all events... from Daisy's to seniors. ... you are
the one constant that Yorba Linda Girl Scouts knew they
could count on. Thank You
As we sat at your "Boot" party, we were both
touched by all the people that you've had an effect on
through the years. We are proud to be among them and will
look forward to lots more years together in the volunteer
ranks.
Love and Best Wishes

| Jackie,
I feel like the new kid on the block having only known
you for two years! But I truly appreciate having had
the chance to know you and work with you. You have been
such a great support for me and I can’t thank
you enough for all that you’ve done as the “V”
in my “MVP”. You are a true inspiration
not only to me as a troop leader, being a living example
of seeing your girls grow from Brownies to young women,
but you’re a great inspiration to all that you’ve
worked with (and that’s a LOT of people!!) I love
hearing your stories of “the good ol’ days”
in Girl Scouts and you truly make me wish I was a part
of Girl Scouts as a girl. Thank you for everything,
Jackie!

Jackie:
Through the past 12 years as first an Assistant Troop
Leader and then the Leader of Troop 2092, you have always
gone out of your way to be helpful and kind. I always
looked forward to our Friday Troop meetings at the Yorba
Linda Girl Scout House, partly because I knew that you
were there to assist and answer any question that may
arrise. When I began chairing the Brownie Bash in 2005,
you helped make it so easy, that I have continued with
it every year since. I look forward to working with you
in the future as you rejoin our volunteer ranks here in
Yorba Linda.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you
have done and will continue to do. you are what Girl Scouting
is all about.
Yours truly,
Sharon Peterson

| The
first time I met Jackie was when I was at my house for
a committee meeting. She had just become the membership
development director for Yorba Linda and I had just become
the Olympic chair. That was some 10 years ago. Since then,
we have done so many committee meetings—yikes literally
hundreds. I have come to respect her, appreciate her,
place tremendous value in her opinion and love her. I
don’t think that I would have stayed in Scouting
and developed myself as a leader without her. I, like
my daughter and like Jackie, am very proud to be a Girl
Scout. I thank Jackie for developing that pride. She has
inspired me to get involved past being a troop leader,
and been there all the way with support and information.
I hope we never stray too far apart, and know I have made
a true friend. Thanks for a great decade Jackie.

A
Toast for JacKIE
The first time I heard of Jackie –
I thought Oh Geez! – a NEW Jackie!
A short haired Blonde Jackie!
Our Fun and Fantastic short haired Brunette Jacque -
retiring!
She
spells her name KIE not QUE???
She’s a VSS not a MDD???
We gotta break-in a NEW Jackie!
Who’s this NEW Jackie?
You know we in the YL don’t like change!
But
Change was good with our NEW Jackie
She brought a wealth of scouting knowledge
She groomed and tuned, corralled and tamed us!
And who said it couldn’t be done with the NEW
Jackie?
She’s
a mentor, a role model, a guide and a friend,
This NEW Jackie has supported and stuck with us till
the end!
We look forward to the future memories to be made
As she joins the ranks of these fellow volunteers who
are underpaid!
Join
us now as we toast not the NEW Jackie
But affectionately OUR Jackie!
We’d like to thank her with this tribute parade!
And
last but not least – Who’s this NEW Lesley
anyway?
Thanks
Jackie!

I
want to thank Jackie for all the support, advice, friendship,
and kindness she has given to me in the many years that
I have known her. She always held herself to the highest
standards and represented Girl Scouts with the upmost
integrity and honor. I have the highest respect for
her and the qualities of life she represents.
Whenever
I had a question, concern, or just wanted a sounding
board, Jackie was there and she listened. I appreciated
all of her reliable and dependable advice.
Jackie was a great resource for our Service Unit, our
Troop, and to me as an individual for which I am forever
grateful.
As
a person who also shares the love of Camp Scherman,
she is dedicated and knowledgeable about so many aspects
of camp. She took me under her wing and taught me so
much about how camp runs. My first time working in the
kitchen as a core-camp staff, she taught me so much
about the equipment in that HUGE kitchen, how to use
the equipment, which can be quite intimidating by its'
sure size…and YES.. I use all the equipment including
the mega-grill during core-camps quite comfortably now.
One
email that I received from Jackie stated: “Working
with people like you helps me come to work each day!"
After receiving this email.. I was in a state of awe
for several days. Because…I have the same feeling..with
the exception…”that it was the ability in
working with Jackie that helped me keep on doing what
I do for Girl Scouts”, this relationship I will
truly miss.
The charm of her spirit, style, and class made our partnership
the very quality of effective teamwork.
Mostly
. . . I look forward to the possibility in working with
Jackie in other volunteer positions and hopefully back
at camp in the future.

- I will always be grateful for your support and encouragement
during my unexpected transition to Service Unit Manager.
Your guidance was what kept me going as I worked and
learned my way through the end of the year, as well
as the next two more years. I miss popping in on you,
and will always appreciate how you were able to drop
anything you were doing, to give me your undivided attention.
I value our friendship from the past ten years, and
look forward to working with you on future Girl Scout
events.... just don't give me the KEY!

Dear
Jackie,
I
want to thank you for being the person who was there
for me through all the highs and lows of Girl Scouting.
Without you and the encouragement, support and knowledge
that you provided I couldn't have been the leader or
Service Unit Manager that I was or you made me aspire
to be.
With
love and best wishes on your next exciting adventure,

Jackie,
you are my hero. You mean so much to so many, and have
done so much for so many. I am glad to say that I have
known you in Girl Scouting. I am even happier to say that
I have you for a life-long friend.
Love,

Thank
you Jackie for being such an amazing ambassador for
Girl Scouts. You have always represented Girl Scouts
with such amazing dignity. You have earned the respect
of everyone who has known you or worked with you. As
a Service Unit Manager I miss you as my VSS every single
day. I just want to thank you for always being there
to provide answers, give excellent advice, offer sage
counsel and impart invaluable wisdom. It is through
your example that so many
of us learned the true meaning of the Girl Scout Law
and Promise because you live it in everything you do.
With
love and friendship always,

Self Tribute
By Amy Senna
I
have known Jackie for 30 years, and she has literally
watched me grow up as a Girl Scout volunteer. One of
my earliest memories of Jackie is when as a 6th grader,
her Yorba Linda Cadette troop kidnapped me from my tent
at Camp Scherman to attend a fun “bridging to
Cadettes breakfast,” She has always been a great
Girl Scout role model, so it was no surprise that Jackie
became council staff. As a troop leader myself these
last 8 years, Jackie has continued to provide insight
and inspiration. She’s always been there to answer
questions, provide clarification on council issues,
and assist with complicated matters. It is a credit
to her strong Girl Scout background that she continues
to serve in a volunteer capacity. Enjoy your retirement
Jackie, and welcome back to the volunteer ranks!
|
| I
have known Jackie for about 30 years. I think we were
both Junior leaders at about the same time. Our paths
have crossed many times as we went through scouting. She
has always done a great job, both as a leader and as paid
staff. Yorba Linda Girl Scouts have been blessed to have
Jackie in our ranks. Thanks, Jackie!!

Jackie,
you were such a great resource to our troops through the
years! Your knowledge of Girl Scouting, the organization
and the resources available to us helped us as Leaders
point the girls in directions they might not have ever
explored. There was such comfort and familiarity in having
you as our MDD with your wealth of knowledge and helpful,
can-do, get-it done and find the answer attitude. You
were a great liason in helping us transition Service Units.
You believed in us and our abilities and sincerity to
guide the girls and you contributed to our girls having
a great Senior Girl Scout experience!!!! We will greatly
miss your smile and friendliness!!!
Sincerely,
Chris McGilvery and Pam Welling

Jackie,
You are truly one-in-a-million. I am one of the few
who are lucky enough to have you as a mentor as a girl
in your Brownie troop, and again as an adult SU Mgr.
I don’t know anyone as giving, unselfish, and
beautiful as you!

Make
new friends but keep the old; To my “Gold”
friend Jackie Self
I have had the privilege of knowing you for about 5 years
now. I was unsure of just how we would interact as you
being my new boss. I soon came to realize that I had absolutely
nothing to worry about because when you get the best you
can do no less. Hey I rhymed! Seriously Jackie you gave
me such strength with your self assuredness, that it was
a comfort to me. I soon came to realize that my insecurities
were silly because with you at the helm, I was safe. ?
Throughout the years we had such a great relationship
that I didn’t even realize that we were anything
but actual “friends”. I never once thought
of you as a Girl Scout council member or Girl Scout employee.
I always thought of you as my friend. You have always
been there for me, through thick and thin. I very much
appreciate you going to bat for me. I never doubted your
sincerity.
I actually cried when I heard the news about your leaving,
or shall I say forced to leave. I was so depressed for
days. I will always come to you with my questions and
I know you will have the answers. I absolutely do NOT
agree with how Nancy handled your leaving. I had to be
strong and face her on the advisory panel, which was extremely
difficult. I still have a sour taste in my mouth when
I think of you and just how they treated you.
I will forever be your friend. I look forward to working
with you on a volunteer level and especially at Camp Scherman.
I will do just about anything for you. Good luck to you
on your retirement and God Bless you and your family.
God has reasons for everything he does and I have no doubt
he has very special plans for you now even as we speak.
God is the ruler of my life and I am so very blessed that
he crossed our paths. I love you dearly and wish and pray
for only the best for you! I will leave with my very favorite
Bible passage: “Trust in the Lord with all your
heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all
that you do acknowledge him, and he shall guide your path”.
Proverbs 3:5-7
Always your friend, Debi Woodworth

I
remember when I was first considering taking on the overwhelming
position as a Girl Scout Brownie leader, Jackie made it
feel more attainable, I could take it on and survive!
I could do it! She empowered me to give it my all. Of
course, by always being a resourse for even the simplest
of questions made a big difference in ramping up for the
position. It's been 1 1/2 years and I feel like a veteran!
Although, I couldn't have gotten through it as smoothly
as I did without the support of everyone involved with
Girl Scouts.
Sincerely,
Inge Barbee

be sorely missed, but are wished all the best!

Since
Jackie left, the Yorba Linda Girl Scout House has not
felt the same. She was there so often, arriving there
felt like we were entering her home, very welcomed. Jackie
was always prompt with getting our troop everything we
needed, especially the keys to the Program Center. Scheduling
meeting times was always quick and easy because of her
efforts. She was always available to answer any questions
about Girl Scouts for us new, and not so new leaders.
I will miss her smiling, helpful manner. She was the best
Girl Scout representative the organization could ask for.
She always represented the organization with class and
a friendly smile. Jackie, I miss seeing you and pray the
next chapter in your life finds you doing what you do
best; helping others for an organization that appreciates
your efforts.
Very Sincerely,
Jen Fuher, Troop 294. |

Jackie,
I was looking for the perfect word to sum up our relationship
and came up with "partnership".
A thesaurus gives the following synonyms for "partnership":
community, connection, friendship, cooperation, togetherness,
"cahoots", and sisterhood.
That pretty much sums it up. Thanks for all the years
of support........the partnership continues........Irene

I
just wanted to say how I've always appreciated Jackie's
always being there for us. She was a great support for
us registrars as far as answering questions, supplying

positive feedback, appreciation and "attaboys."
Jackie, you're awesome and we'll miss you!....

- As an incoming Daisy leader with 15 Pre-K children 4
years ago (the 2nd troop in OC Girl Scouts' history to
be that young), I had no clue how it all worked. You were
so patient as you answered questions, gave me some great
ideas, introduced me to other leaders and made me feel
at "home". I can't thank you enough for the
words of encouragement and praise you have given me throughout
the years and all that with a smile! Thank you - Uschi

Jackie,
You’re the best! I really appreciate all that you’ve
done for me as a GS leader, from the day to day operations
of scouting to your help dealing with problems; you have
always given sage advice and a tremendous amount of support.
Your calm and patient attitude and extensive knowledge
and concern for girls and leaders have been a blessing
for the 8+ years I’ve been a leader in Yorba Linda.
You have helped to make Girl Scouts an organization that
I am proud to represent.
You make the world a better place!

I
have such warm memories of our “other life”
at Camp Scherman, especially at Family Camp. Those were
fun years when my kids were growing up and enjoying all
that Scherman has to offer. Later sharing stargazing nights
was special. You showed me the Summer Triangle, and I
in turn have added that to my little bag of astronomy
with kids and adults. What a boost of confidence you gave
Kim when you handed her a camp radio and a golf cart and
sent her out to run Archery! Come join us more often with
the Prim bunch….
As always, the best of wishes,

What
is a Girl Scout?
Some smile at a daisy dressed in a blue smock filled with
wonder...
Some see a brownie in a beanie selling cookies for the
first time...
Some picture a Junior in that ever so attractive Girl
Scout green...
Some think of a Cadette, bandanna in her hair, putting
up her tent at camp...
Some recall a Senior scout teaching leading a group of
younger girls...
In
Yorba Linda we are blessed with a woman who sets the
example what scouting brings to this world at the adult
level. Her leadership these many years has enabled the
daisies, brownies, juniors, cadettes and seniors in
countless troops to have many opportunities through
her support. Whether at Camp Scheman, in the field,
or at service unit meetings Jackie always displays the
unique grace and poise of someone who lives the Girl
Scout law. When I think of Jackie I think of asking
questions and getting answers with a touch of humor
and a lot of thought for every situation. Thank you
for all your years of service, Jackie!
